Rescuers used helicopters and boats to evacuate thousands of people stranded on their rooftops following unprecedented flooding in the southern Indian state of Kerala that killed more than 320 people, with hospitals facing shortages of oxygen and gas station short on fuel in a situation called “really heartbreaking” by the authorities.
With heavy rains taking a pause this week, rescuers moved quickly to move flood-stranded citizens to 1,500 state-run camps.
They used more than a dozen helicopters and about 400 boats across the state, and a top elected official told reporters that at least 324 people had died and more than 220,000 had taken refuge in the camps.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday defended his former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, as a “good person,” as a jury at a Virginia federal court entered the second day of deliberations in Manafort’s bank and tax fraud trial.
“I think the whole Manafort trial is unfortunate,” Trump told reporters in White House before departing for fundraising events in New York.
“He worked for me for a concise period,” Trump said of Manafort.
“He happens to be a perfect person.”
The president didn’t answer when asked if he is prepared to pardon Manafort, a veteran lobbyist who joined Trump’s campaign team in March 2016 and spent three months as Trump’s campaign chairman until mid-August of that year.

A new US constitutional amendment will be proposed in Congress next week that if passed would prevent President Trump from revoking security clearances at his discretion, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mark Warner, said in a statement.
