President Trump suggested that even though the concept of chokeholds ‘sounds so innocent, so perfect’, the police use of chokeholds “should be ended” in most instances, saying he doesn’t like them as a common  practice, joining support on both sides of Congress for a ban on chokeholds.

“I don’t like chokeholds,” Mr. Trump said in an interview with Fox News.

“[But] sometimes, if you’re alone and you’re fighting someone, it’s tough. It would be, I think, a very good thing that, generally speaking, it should be ended.”

GOP members have indicated support for joining a ban on chokeholds, following the May 25 passing of black man George Floyd, who died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

Minneapolis City Council yesterday unanimously passed a resolution to pursue a community-led public safety system to replace its police department following Mr. Floyd’s death, but Mayor Jacob Frey has stopped short of vying to abolish the police department, although he said this week that he supported “massive structural reform to revise a structurally racist system”.
