France, Germany, Spain and Italy have said they are awaiting an investigation by the EU’s regulator into reports of clots in a small number of recipients, while other EU members, including Poland and Belgium, are continuing its use, as the head European Medicines Agency (EMA) Mr. Emer Cooke said it was still “firmly convinced” of the benefits of the AstraZeneca drug pointed out that blood clots highlighted by some countries were relatively common in the general population:

“I want to stress at present there is no indication that vaccination has caused these conditions,” she said.

In a joint statement later on Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said the EMA’s comments were “encouraging”.

Meanwhile, experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) were also meeting on Tuesday but a spokesman stressed there was “no evidence” that the reported blood clots were linked to the vaccine.

“At 22:35 (2035 GMT) this evening the Israeli enemy carried out an aggression from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights on some targets in the Damascus area,” Syrian state news agency SANA cited a military source as saying.

“Our air defences intercepted the attack and shot down most of” the missiles, it said, adding there were no casualties.

AFP reporters heard explosions above the capital, which official media said were the air defenses responding to the attack.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the air strikes had targeted two ammunition depots belonging to Iranian militias fighting on the side of the Damascus government just a few kilometers from the Damascus airport south of the capital.

Domestic tourism revenue recorded year-on-year growth starting from the third day of the weeklong holiday, while the number of tourists traveling to and from major tourist destinations like Guangdong, Shanghai and Beijing exceeding, or almost reaching the levels seen during the 2019 Spring Festival.

The exact cost of the latter remains unclear so far, but according to some estimates cited by Bloomberg could reach between $2 and $4 trillion, since Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announcement that at least part of the bill will have to be paid for by taxpayers instead of using government debt. Biden’s team is reportedly now working on changes to the taxation system that would help to pay for the bill.

A US agency that normally deals with major emergencies and natural disasters has been brought in to help care for the rising numbers of migrant children arriving at the US southern border, the job to “help receive, shelter and transport the children” for the next 90 days, as President Joe Biden has reversed some of his predecessor’s policies, due to the recent surge of arrivals that is putting pressure on processing systems. There were a record number of children – 3,200 – being held in US immigration facilities on the US-Mexican border as of 8 March, with hundreds continuing to arrive each day, many  being held beyond the legal three-day limit for being processed and transferred. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas admitted last week that the situation on the border was “overwhelming” but not yet a crisis.

 Chinese staff were injured and trapped in arson attacks by unidentified assailants on garment factories in Hlaingthaya, and managers had called on Myanmar to protect Chinese property and citizens, since it is viewed as being supportive of the military junta that has taken power. A further 16 protesters were killed in other places, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) said, as well as one policeman, making it the bloodiest day since the Feb. 1 coup against elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi:

“It was horrible. People were shot before my eyes. It will never leave my memory,” said one photojournalist on the scene who did not want to be named.

Germany is seeing rising COVID infections and things are likely to get much worse by Easter, according to the country’s Robert Koch Institute, as country’s seven-day incidence rate for coronavirus infections on Saturday continued its rise of the past few days, reaching 76.1 cases per 100,000 residents, a sharp increase over last week, where the rate was 72.4, itself a marked jump from the day before. The Institute also predicted that the incidence could climb much higher in the coming weeks and reach 350 by mid-April, comparable to the one seen around Christmas, with nearly 32,200 infections reported on December 24, as the country eased some curbs but state premiers agreed the harshest measures would be automatically re-imposed if the rate went above 100. 

But two states — Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia — have since said they would not necessarily put strict restrictions in place if the figure is reached.

BEIJING, March 13 (Xinhua) — The number of investors in China’s securities market reached around 181.48 million by the end of February, industry data shows.

Individual investors accounted for 99.77 percent of the total, while institutional investors accounted for 0.23 percent, according to the China Securities Depository and Clearing Corporation Ltd.
