The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) reported that the prominent Egyptian journalist Wael Abbas has been removed blindfolded from his Cairo home, with authorities giving no legal reason for his arrest that followed recent detentions of two other bloggers. 

In 2006, Abbas came to prominence for posting videos showing police brutality and earned the Knight International Journalism Award in 2007.

Less than a week after the two countries suspended plans to impose tariffs on up to $US200 billion ($265 billion) worth of each other’s goods, a well-placed news release that bolted DJI almost 300 points upwards, President  Trump declared in a tweet that a more detailed agreement “will be too hard to get done”, while hedging himself that the talks were “moving along nicely, and negotiations with China would require “a different structure”.

 
In support of Mr.Trump statements, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross will soon travel to Beijing to try to settle the details, and China’s Commerce Ministry pledged to work “conscientiously” with Washington.

The United States’ decision to exclude China from the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) naval exercises is not constructive and Beijing hopes Washington will change its negative mindset, Chinese State Councilor Wang Yi said during a joint press conference with US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo on Wednesday.

“On the Pentagon’s [exclusion] of Chinese military in RIMPAC exercise, we find that a very non-constructive move, it’s also a decision that’s taken lightly, it’s unhelpful to mutual understanding between China and the United States, we hope the United States will change such a negative mindset,” Wang told reporters.

The United States canceled its invitation to China to participate in maritime exercises in the Indo-Pacific region because of Beijing’s wholesale pirating out of the South China Sea and demanded an immediate removal its military assets as well as stop turning the disputed islands into forwarding PLA bases.

Following a two-week trial, a federal jury in Denver, Colorado, has convicted a California man named Kenneth Brewington, 55, of Corona, California, on multiple charges for his role in an investment scheme in which he falsely told investors that he was a billionaire who could access certain financing, including hundreds of millions in cash in an overseas bank account, in exchange for up-front fees.

He was convicted of one count of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, one count of mail fraud, five counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, one count of laundering monetary instruments, and two counts of engaging in monetary transactions in property derived from unlawful activity.

“Kenneth Brewington and his co-conspirators deceived investors by falsely claiming to have hundreds of millions of dollars in cash in an overseas bank account as part of a criminal scheme to steal the investors’ hard-earned money,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Cronan. “The Department of Justice is dedicated to working with our law enforcement partners to identify and prosecute people who are involved in fraudulent investment schemes, and to pursuing justice for the victims of those crimes.”

“A US Government employee in China recently reported subtle and vague, but abnormal, sensations of sound and pressure. The US Government is taking these reports seriously and has informed its official staff in China of this event,” a statement said.

The unnamed American citizen assigned to the consulate in Guangzhou had reported a variety of “physical symptoms” dating from late 2017 to April this year, the US embassy in Beijing said in an email.

The worker was sent to the United States for further evaluation, where “the clinical findings of this evaluation matched mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI),” the embassy said.

A Spanish galleon that sank more than 300 years ago laden with gold worth now almost 22 billion dollars, was found three years ago in 1800 feet of water of the Colombian coast near the town of San Jose, a watery grave where 600 men were lost in a battle with British ships in the War of Spanish Succession. 

 
 

“We’ve been holding this under wraps out of respect for the Colombian government,” said WHOI’s vice president for marine facilities and operations, Rob Munier.

The exact location of the wreck of the San Jose, often called the “holy grail of shipwrecks”, was long considered one of history’s enduring maritime mysteries.

Art restorer Jiri Lauterkranc has been studying a painting called “La Crau with a View of Montmajour” for three years after his team found it by using a  combination of a specialist X-ray scanner and traditional methods to identify the painting.

Mr. Lauterkranc believes the painting is a genuine Vincent Van Gogh and is sending evidence to the Van Gogh Foundation for final verification.

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted on Thursday, sending ash 30,000 feet (9,144 meters) into the sky.

Authorities warned residents of Big Island to shelter in place.

A massive column of ash and steam that started erupting early in the morning, lasting for only a few minutes, Authorities said residents were safe so long as they stayed out of the surround Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

 A federal jury convicted a  Latvian man identified as  Ruslans Bondars, 37,  a non-citizen of the former USSR who had been hiding in Riga, Latvia, of three counts related to his operation of “Scan4you,” an online counter antivirus service that helped computer hackers to determine whether the computer viruses and other malicious software they created would be detected by antivirus software.        
 

He was convicted after a five-day jury trial of one count of conspiracy to violate the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and one count of computer intrusion with intent to cause damage and aiding and abetting.

 

“Ruslans Bondars helped hackers test and improve the malware they then used to inflict hundreds of millions of dollars in losses on American companies and consumers,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Cronan.  

“Today’s verdict should serve as a warning to those who aid and abet criminal hackers: the Criminal Division and our law enforcement partners consider you to be just as culpable as the hackers whose crimes you enable—and we will work tirelessly to identify you, prosecute you, and seek stiff sentences that reflect the seriousness of your crimes.”

Since last spring, Chinese authorities in the heavily Muslim region of Xinjiang have imprisoned tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of Muslim Chinese — and even foreign citizens — in mass internment camps.

US State Department estimates detainees “at the very least in the tens of thousands”, with detainees who most vigorously criticise the people and things they love are rewarded, and those who refuse are punished with solitary confinement, beatings, and food deprivation. 

This detention campaign has swept across Xinjiang in what a US commission on China last month said was “the largest mass incarceration of a minority population in the world today”.

The US State Department estimated those being held were “at the very least in the tens of thousands”.

A Turkey-based TV station run by Xinjiang exiles said almost 900,000 were detained, citing leaked government documents.

In yet another horror story coming to you courtesy of the “Hippie Communist State” of California, ten children rescued from a Solano County home were punched, kicked, strangled, shot with a BB gun and subjected to waterboarding by their father, as their mother did nothing to stop it, with torture being carried out “for sadistic purposes”.

 

The father, Jonathan Allen, 29, pleaded not guilty to nine counts of child abuse and seven counts of torture, and the children’s mother, Ina Rogers, 31, was charged with nine counts of child abuse. 

She also faces one count of child neglect involving all 10 children.
