The overall number of unaccompanied children crossing the US-Mexico border is expected to increase exponentially in the next months, putting additional strain on the resources needed to shelter the children while processing them and creating a crisis for the Biden administration, as a news that US Customs and Border Protection now has more than 5,000 unaccompanied children in its custody, up from less than 4,500 earlier this week.

Rumors that over 600 of those children have been held in custody for more than ten days, as unaccompanied children are required by law to be turned over to the Department of Health and Human Services within 72 hours, which oversees a shelter network intended to house minors. Following conditions due to pandemic-related restrictions, children are staying in custody for longer than the 72-hour limit, and are being held in Border Patrol custody for an average of more than five days in “jail-like facilities.”

The exact cost of the latter remains unclear so far, but according to some estimates cited by Bloomberg could reach between $2 and $4 trillion, since Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announcement that at least part of the bill will have to be paid for by taxpayers instead of using government debt. Biden’s team is reportedly now working on changes to the taxation system that would help to pay for the bill.

There were a record number of children – 3,200 – being held in US immigration facilities on the US-Mexican border as of 8 March, with hundreds continuing to arrive each day, many  being held beyond the legal three-day limit for being processed and transferred. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas admitted last week that the situation on the border was “overwhelming” but not yet a crisis.

 Chinese staff were injured and trapped in arson attacks by unidentified assailants on garment factories in Hlaingthaya, and managers had called on Myanmar to protect Chinese property and citizens, since it is viewed as being supportive of the military junta that has taken power. A further 16 protesters were killed in other places, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) said, as well as one policeman, making it the bloodiest day since the Feb. 1 coup against elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi:

US President Joe Biden message of the US airstrikes that were delivered to Iran was very clear:

“You can’t act with impunity. Be careful,” with his statement coming after the Pentagon confirmed that the US had carried out airstrikes in Syria on Biden’s order, targeting what it believed were “Iranian-backed militia”, designed by the US Defense Department, the American missile strike being a “proportionate military response” to attacks against its military assets in Iraq that occurred earlier in February.

Iran on Friday denounced the US airstrikes as “aggression” and “violation of international law”, insisting that the US presence in Syria is illegal. The attack was also condemned by Syrian authorities as a “cowardly aggression” that will “lead to consequences that will escalate the situation in the region.”

The US airstrikes reportedly “partially destroyed” two buildings and completely destroyed nine. The facilities were used, according to Washington, by Shia militia group Kata’ib Hezbollah and other formations that are believed to be behind the attacks against American military assets in Iraq.
