SAN JOSE, Calif. – Daniel Corbett, 32, who held a position of public trust as a former case manager at a nonprofit organization assisting homeless families was sentenced for the possession of child pornography, April 6, as the result of a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) probe.

Corbett was ordered by a Northern District of California federal judge to 60 months incarceration and 5 years supervised release, pay $36,000 in restitution to the victims, $5,000 in fines and required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

“All investigations involving the exploitation of children are heinous, but it is particularly troubling when the accused occupies a position of public trust and seeks to exploit the most vulnerable in our society,” said Special Agent in Charge Tatum King, who oversees HSI operations in Northern California.
“HSI in combination with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners are determined to continue to relentlessly pursue child predators.”

Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin has been charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the death of Minnesota resident George Floyd on 25 May 2020, after jurors assigned to his trial found the former cop guilty on all counts, bringing to a close three weeks’ worth of witness and expert testimony.

Charged with second-degree murder, he faces up to 40 years in prison on that offense alone, with the third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter carry maximum prison sentences of 25 years and 10 years, despite that Chauvin has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

DENVER — A Colorado man identified as  Felipe Nevarez, age 40, of Alamosa, Colorado, was convicted of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine April 19, according to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) that was joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado in making the announcement.

Facts presented at trial established deputies with the Alamosa County Sherriff’s Department encountered Nevarez, who had several state warrants for his arrest, was driving a black BMW April 3, 2019, but then evaded law enforcement by reversing the BMW at top speed down a rural driveway. He got out of the car and fled into an open field, and after nearly forty-five minutes of searching, law enforcement found him hiding in a field within arm’s reach of a large bag of methamphetamine along with more than $16,000 in cash.

This case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

“This criminal defrauded hundreds of victims who thought they were starting a path to legal citizenship,” said HSI Tampa Assistant Special in Charge Michael Cochran.
“Identity and benefit fraud are crimes that threaten the national security and public safety of the U.S. by creating vulnerabilities to our legal immigration system. Thanks to HSI special agents, and our partners with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, he will now be held accountable for his crimes.

“The defendants deceived the U.S. Navy by willfully failing to satisfy the company’s obligations under $120 million in contracts with the Department of Defense that were designed, among other things, to ensure the company not only delivered the required services to the Navy, but also complied with critical environmental safeguards,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Nicholas L.
