The people who run American elections have a special prayer, according to Professor Nate Persily, Co-Director of the Stanford-MIT Healthy Elections Project.
“Oh God, whatever happens, please don’t let it be close,” he said.
Persily said we’ll know one thing for sure a couple of hours after polls close on election day (most are closed by 1:00pm AEDT).
“We will know which world we live in. Do we live in a world where there’s a clear victor or is it one where there’s going to be a lot of contestation over absentee ballots?”
He said many states will likely return clear results on election night.
They are:
Florida, North Carolina, Texas, Maine, New Hampshire, Lots of non-battleground states.
“Based on the results in those states, we will have a good sense of how President Trump is doing this year as compared to four years ago,” Persily said.

Two of Europe’s biggest economies are reinstating some form of national lockdown, as the continent confronts a surge in coronavirus cases and deaths, hence from Friday, the French people will only be allowed to leave home for essential work or medical reasons, with President Emmanuel Macron saying the country risked being “overwhelmed by a second wave that no doubt will be harder than the first”.
The Islamic Merkeldom of Germany is imposing a less severe national lockdown, but they include the closure of restaurants, bars, gyms and theatres, Chancellor Angela Merkel said.
Infections are rising sharply across Europe, including in the UK which announced 310 new deaths and 24,701 new cases.
In England, a new study shows almost 100,000 people are catching the virus every day, putting pressure on the government to change policy from a regional approach.
In France, Covid daily deaths are at the highest level since April. On Wednesday, 36,437 new cases and 244 deaths were confirmed.
German health officials said another 89 people had died in the past 24 hours, with a record 16,774 infections.
“We are deep in the second wave,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said. “I think that this year’s Christmas will be a different Christmas.”

WASHINGTON – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced Wednesday preliminary results from Operation OPTical Illusion, a law enforcement operation targeting nonimmigrant students who fraudulently used the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program to remain in the United States. OPT enables nonimmigrant students to work in the United States in positions related to their field of study for up to one year, with an additional 24 months if the student participates in STEM optional practical training.
The operation, which is ongoing, resulted in the arrest of 15 nonimmigrant students who claimed to be employed by companies that don’t exist.
“Today’s announcement is just another example of the Trump Administration not only putting America first but making sure the laws of our immigration system are enforced,” said Acting Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli.
“Every instance of fraud is a job an American worker could have had, and with so many Americans looking for work this crime is even more unacceptable.”
“ICE has a system of checks in place to mitigate fraud and is committed to protecting national security by ensuring that students, visitors, and schools comply with U.S. immigration laws,” said ICE Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Director Tony Pham.
“These latest arrests demonstrate that the agency is actively targeting individuals who try to exploit the student visa system.”
