SYNDEY – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Canberra provided the Australian Border Force (ABF) with information that resulted in the seizure of 552 kilograms of cocaine worth an estimated $248 million. The operation leading to the seizure began in September 2020 following information from HSI on a suspected shipment containing drugs destined for Australia.
HSI Canberra provided Australian authorities with details on the possibility of narcotics smuggled into Australia concealed as bananas from Brazil. The container was identified and inspected by the ABF on Sept. 21 and held for further investigation by the Australian Federal Police (AFP). ABF officers identified anomalies within the approximately 275 boxes in the shipment that contained banana pulp, and upon closer examination, ultimately discovered cocaine hidden within the banana pulp bags.
“This joint investigation demonstrates the importance of strong international partnerships when it comes to dismantling transnational criminal organizations,” said ICE Canberra Attaché Adam Parks.
“By working together, we were able to swiftly gather crucial information on the smuggling of cocaine through a shipment of fruit to Australia. I commend HSI Brazil and our Australian partners their professionalism, devotion and unrelenting efforts on targeting organizations and individuals involved in these major transnational crimes.”

Early US voting both by mail and in-person has surged to record highs ahead of Election Day on 3 November, mostly driven to a degree by the COVID-19 pandemic, as about 36 per cent of registered voters had already cast ballots, following election officials issuing warnings that early voting ballots sent via the US Postal Service might fail to arrive in time to be counted.
Amid a record surge in early voting by mail and in-person, with less than a week to go until Election Day on 3 November, more than 42 million out of the 92 million mail ballots requested by voters nationally are yet to be returned, according to data supplied by the US Elections Project by Wednesday afternoon.
Based on national first-class mail service projections, 27 October was the informal deadline by which ballots could be mailed to ensure delivery in time for Election Day, according to postal and election administration experts.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has repeatedly asked local jurisdictions to reconsider non-cooperation policies because those policies put politics before public safety. On Friday, ICE released more examples of foreign nationals with active ICE detainers who have been detained for serious criminal offenses. ICE asks each of these jurisdictions to transfer these individuals to federal custody instead of releasing them to the community where they may reoffend.

ICE maintains that cooperation with local law enforcement is essential to protecting public safety, and the agency aims to work cooperatively with local jurisdictions to ensure that criminal aliens are not released into U.S. communities to commit additional crimes.

“The only way a person is subject to an ICE detainer… is if they are handcuffed and arrested for a crime committed in the local community,” said acting ICE Director Matt Albence.

Mr. Fahey said Australia’s financial markets were relatively small so, in an effort to stretch returns, local fund managers were investing more of their clients’ super in international markets, including the US.

“I think what we have to be increasingly aware of is that, as our superannuation system has grown, increasingly, money has been deployed offshore,” he said.
