2………… > Aussie Army Choppers: Pulling People Out Of Harms Way

Army helicopters were sent to help dozens of people escape the fierce fire threat in Victoria, where more than 100 properties have been razed and towns remained at risk overnight, and about 50 people were flown out of Omeo as fire menaced the town, as minicipalities in the state’s north-east are facing a night of dangerous bushfire conditions.

Strong winds are continuing to push fires towards communities in Victoria’s north-east and East Gippsland, where six people remain missing, with at least 110 properties, and 220 outbuildings had been lost — but the full scale of the damage is not yet known after thousands of people fled threatened communities.

“There’s still many, many communities that we’ve not been able to really get into and do a proper assessment,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.(abc.net.au)

3…………> ‘The Ghost of Manzanar’: WW2 Japanese Internee Body Found

A Japanese-American artist who was held in a World War Two internment camp, then presumed dead when lost in the mountains of California, has been positively identified when Tyler Hofer and Brandon Follin came across an intact skeleton, partially covered by rocks while hiking near Mount Williamson,

Giichi Matsumura had gone on a hike with fellow internees from the Manzanar internment camp for people of Japanese ancestry when he died in August 1945, left the group to paint the scene in solitude when a freak storm hit, was given a sparse burial in the mountains, and details of his death were eventually lost to time.

2………..> Cherish Your Teacher Or Else: Sudan Torturers

A Sudanese court has sentenced 29 intelligence officers to death for the torture and killing of the teacher Ahmad al-Khair, 36, who died in custody in February following his arrest for taking part in protests against then President Omar al-Bashir’s government.

These are the first sentences handed down over the crackdown on pro-democracy activists in the months before Bashir was toppled in April, with the prosecution saying the death sentences were a just punishment.

After the sentencing, the judge asked al-Khair’s brother, Sa’d, whether he wanted the 29 men to be pardoned – but he said he wanted them to be executed instead.

The court found that Ahmad Al-Khair was beaten and tortured to death by the officers at a detention.

3…………> Applied Global Warming: Aussie Fires Rage

Residents of Melbourne suburbs were told it was too late to leave, as a firefighter in the eastern state of New South Wales also died Monday in the blazes, and firetrucks were stationed on the road.

Residents of Bundoora, Greensborough and Mill Park were told that it was too late to leave, and instead to “take shelter indoors” after the warning was sent out this afternoon around 3.20pm local time.

East Gippsland, a region in the far northeastern corner of Victoria, was projected to be the hardest hit by Monday’s blazes. The area is home to about 80,000 residents and is a popular area for outdoor tourism.

Multiple fires in northeastern Tasmania were burning at an emergency level, as the usually cool island state reached temperatures of more than double the summer average, with the state capital, Hobart, experiencing 40.8 C (105.4 F) — the city’s hottest December day on record.

4…………> Thanks For The Tip: Putin To Trump

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said Monday it had detained two Russian nationals for plotting terrorist attacks during the New Year holidays in Russia’s second largest city, St. Petersburg, following a tip from U.S. law enforcement partners.

“Evidence confirming their preparations for terrorist attacks was seized from the detainees. They have confessed,” it said, after Russian President Vladimir Putin called President  Trump to thank him “for the information transmitted through the channels of U.S. special services that has helped thwart terrorist acts in Russia,” the Kremlin said in a statement.

The two presidents agreed to continue bilateral cooperation in combating terrorism, it said.
