The incredibly gifted poet who wrote the words for Roberta Flack super hit “Killing Me Softly with His Song”, the theme to TV series “Happy Days”, and the English lyrics to the Brazilian bossa nova melody, “The Girl from Ipanema”, has passed away, aged 91.
Norman Gimbel, the Oscar and Grammy-winning lyricist, has died on 19 December at his home in Montecito, California, with music rights organization BMI said it was “greatly saddened” by news of his passing, describing him as a “truly gifted and prolific writer” who would be greatly missed by friends and fans.
His early successes included the lyrics to Andy Williams’s 1956 hit single “Canadian Sunset”, the songs for popular shows such as “Laverne & Shirley”, “Wonder Woman” and “HR Puffnstuff”.
In 1984 Gimbel was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Mr. Ma, who previously was the vice-minister of the state security bureau, was also ordered to pay more than 50 million yuan ($10.35 million) in penalties.
