South America’s largest treasure of religious monuments and megalithic sculptures isn’t on Easter Island, but it’s Tierradentro’s 162 underground tombs carved into solid volcanic bedrock, and the more than 500 monolithic stone statues and tumuli (ancient burial mounds) surrounding the nearby town of San Agustín, sprinkled throughout 1200 sq miles of the serried mountains and highland plateaus of the Upper Magdalena Valley in southern Colombia.

Spanish conquistador Sebastián de Belalcázar marched up the valley in the late 1530s after conquering the lands of the Inca, but the statues and tombs remained undiscovered until 1757, when Friar Juan de Santa Gertrudis stumbled upon the vast lithic library and called it “the work of the devil” as “The [natives] did not have iron or implements to produce such a thing.”

The German mass daily Bild reported Friday that behind the EU ministers’ declaration was “a large EU survey among 16,395 Jews in the whole of Europe,” with 89 % of those respondents felt that anti-Semitism in Europe had increased sharply since 2013, and 28 percent had suffered anti-Jewish abuse, some of it violent.

Thirty-eight percent were considering whether to emigrate because of the strong trend, and 85 % said anti-Semitism was the biggest problem in their country. The EU has 508 million residents. Jews in Europe amount to about one million or 0.2 percent of the EU population, according to the US-based Jewish Visual Library.

Yesterday, President Trump presented the Medal of Honor to a fallen hero, Technical Sergeant John A. Chapman of the United States Air Force, who died serving in Afghanistan 16 years ago. Sergeant Chapman is the first member of the U.S. Air Force to receive the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War.

On March 4, 2002, on Takur Ghar mountain in Afghanistan, Sergeant Chapman’s aircraft came under heavy enemy fire and was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. One teammate was ejected from the plane, and the crippled helicopter crash-landed in the valley below.

Sergeant Chapman and the remaining joint special operations team members voluntarily returned to the snow-capped mountain—into the heart of a known enemy stronghold—in an attempt to rescue their stranded teammate. Sergeant Chapman charged into the enemy fire through harrowing conditions, seized an enemy bunker, and killed its enemy occupants. Despite severe wounds, he continued to fight relentlessly, sustaining a significant engagement with multiple enemy personnel before paying the ultimate sacrifice. Sergeant Chapman’s heroic actions, at the cost of his life, are credited with saving the lives of his teammates.

“Our nation is rich with blessings,” President Trump said yesterday. “But our greatest blessings of all are the patriots like John.”

From 2000 to 2012, America saw a five-fold increase in the share of babies born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS)—equivalent to one baby suffering from opiate withdrawal taken every 25 minutes, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Last year, 198 babies were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, for NAS. Today, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will tour that facility, discussing the Administration’s three-part plan to halt the opioid crisis. The First Lady’s “Be Best” initiative also aims NAS, educating parents on the importance of healthy pregnancies. Last year, the First Lady visited Lily’s Place in West Virginia, where addiction recovery treatment is available to entire families.

Six indictments and one criminal complaint were unsealed in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, charging a total of 22 defendants with illegally bringing into the United States millions of dollars of Chinese-manufactured goods by smuggling them through ports of entry on the East and West Coasts. One defendant is also charged with unlawful procurement of naturalization. Twenty-one defendants were arrested this morning, and their initial court appearances and arraignments are scheduled before U.S. Magistrate Judge Lois Bloom.

The charges include conspiracy to traffic, and trafficking, in counterfeit goods; conspiracy to smuggle, and smuggling, fake products into the United States; money laundering conspiracy; immigration fraud and unlawful procurement of naturalization. Besides, the government restrained nine real properties in Queens, Staten Island, and Brooklyn, New York belonging to the defendants.

“The defendants allegedly smuggled millions of dollars of counterfeit luxury goods into our country, depriving companies of their valuable and hard-earned intellectual property,” said Assistant Attorney General Benczkowski.

“The illegal smuggling of counterfeit goods poses a real threat to honest businesses, and I commend our federal prosecutors and partners at HSI and the NYPD for their outstanding work on this important investigation. The Department of Justice is committed to holding accountable those who seek to exploit our borders by smuggling counterfeit goods for sale on the black market.”

“As alleged, the defendants used many forms of deception to smuggle large quantities of counterfeit luxury brand goods from China into the United States, and then profited by distributing and selling the fake merchandise,” said U.S. Attorney Donoghue.

“This Office, working with our law enforcement partners, is committed to securing our country’s ports of entry, as well as to protecting the integrity of intellectual property upon which free and fair international trade and markets depend.”

According to the court filings, the defendants played various roles in the trafficking of counterfeit goods manufactured in China, brought by ocean-going ships to the United States in 40-foot shipping containers, smuggled through ports of entry disguised as legitimate imports and distributed throughout the country. The counterfeit goods included items such as fake Louis Vuitton and Tory Burch handbags, Michael Kors wallets, Hermes belts and Chanel perfume.

Eight planes made emergency landings in Chile, Peru, and Argentina over bomb threats, making emergency landings in Rosario, Argentina, and Pisco, Peru among other locations. Chilean police are investigating.

The bomb threats appear to be false at this time as the authorities inspected three of the planes with no bombs found and the fourth in undergoing inspection at Santiago’s Arturo Benitez international airport.

The threats were made through an anonymous phone call to the office of the DGAC; Chilean media reported later in the evening that at least eight false bomb threats to commercial flights had been made.
