NASA has announced plans to send a small helicopter to Mars on their 2020 mission, which also aims to place a rover from the latest generation on the planet. The helicopter has two blades that rotate counter to one another and weighs just 4 pounds (1.81 kg). Its main body section, or fuselage, is no bigger than a softball, according to NASA.

Because the atmosphere on Mars is 100 times thinner than Earth’s, the blades will spin at 3,000 revolutions per minute, which is about 10 times faster than the speed of helicopter blades on Earth.

As of this morning, the initial reunifications were completed. Throughout the reunification process, our goal has been the well-being of the children and returning them to a safe environment. Our agencies’ careful vetting procedures helped prevent the reunification of children with an alleged murderer, an adult convicted of child cruelty, and adults determined not to be the parent of the child. Of course, there remains a tremendous amount of hard work and similar obstacles facing our teams in reuniting the remaining families. The Trump administration does not approach this mission lightly, and we intend to continue our good faith efforts to reunify families.

Below are more details on HHS, DHS, and DOJ progress on reunification, as of 7 a.m. EST, July 12, 2018:

There are 103 children under age 5 covered by the court case. Of the 103 children:

57 children have been reunified as of 7 a.m. EST on July 12; and
46 children were acknowledged by the court to be ineligible for reunification or determined by HHS, DHS, and DOJ to be ineligible under court-approved criteria.

Of those 46 ineligible for reunification:

22 children have been found ineligible due to safety concerns posed by the adults in question:

11 adults have a serious criminal history (charges or convictions for child cruelty, kidnapping, murder, human smuggling, domestic violence, etc.);
7 adults were determined not to be a parent;
1 adult had a falsified birth certificate;
1 adult was alleged to have abused the child;
1 adult planned to house the child with an adult charged with sexually abusing a child; and

1 adult is being treated for a communicable disease.

24 children are not currently eligible for reunification due to circumstances of the adults in question:

12 adults have been deported and are being contacted;
9 adults are in custody of the United States Marshals Service for other offenses;

2 adults are in custody of state jails for other offenses; and
1 adult’s location has been unknown for over a year.

Federal Bureau of Investigation employees deviated from important principles in 2016 and 2017. Everyone knew about some of the departures when they occurred – such as discussing criminal investigations and encroaching on prosecutorial decisions. We learned about others through an internal investigation – such as leaking to the news media and exhibiting political bias.

We need to correct errors, hold wrongdoers accountable, and deter future violations. Director Wray will describe what the FBI is doing to accomplish those goals. At the Department of Justice, our mandatory annual training will include lessons from the Inspector General’s report, and we are considering other recommendations.

We already revised the Department’s confidentiality policies to emphasize that “non-public, sensitive information obtained in connection with [our] work is protected from disclosure.” We intend to enforce that principle for our employees, and we need to demonstrate respect for it ourselves by protecting sensitive information entrusted to the FBI.

A number of flights between Australia and Bali have been canceled after the Mount Agung volcano began spewing water vapor and ash a mile up into the air.
Key points:

“Due to a volcanic ash cloud caused by Mount Agung in Bali, it is currently not safe to operate flights to or from Denpasar Airport,” the statement said.

The canceled Jetstar flights include routes between Denpasar and Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Cairns.

They added that senior pilots will be assessing the situation overnight and provide an update by 9:00 am Friday.

An international spacecraft has discovered complex organic molecules originating from an icy moon orbiting the planet of Saturn, detected by the Cassini spacecraft after they were ejected in ice grains through cracks in Enceladus’ icy shell.

“It is the first-ever detection of complex organics coming from an extraterrestrial water world,” they said.

Cassini previously flew near to Enceladus in 2005 and discovered lighter organic molecules. Larger molecules like those recently detected are created by chemical processes that could support life, according to the European Space Agency (ESA).

Today, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) returned a more than a 500-year-old copy of Christopher Columbus’ letter describing his discoveries in the Americas to Spain during an evening repatriation ceremony at the Residence of the Spanish Ambassador to the United States. The letter, originally written in 1493, was stolen from the National Library of Catalonia in Barcelona and sold for approximately $1 million.

“I am pleased to be able to return a priceless piece of cultural property to its rightful owners,” said HSI Acting Deputy Executive Associate Director Alysa D. Erichs. “I would like to thank Ambassador Morenés for his hospitality in hosting us tonight, HSI Wilmington, Madrid, Brasilia, and Paris for their excellent work on this investigation, as well as the tremendous assistance by our partners at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Delaware, without whom today’s repatriation would not be possible,” Erichs added.

The return of the letter was the culmination of a seven-year investigation jointly conducted by ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware. It began in 2011 when HSI Wilmington (Del.) and the Delaware U.S. Attorney’s Office received a tip that several 15th century original manually printed copies of the Columbus Letter were stolen from European libraries and replaced with forgeries without the knowledge of library officials or local law enforcement. The investigation determined that the stolen Columbus Letter from Spain was sold in November 2005 for 600,000 Euros by two Italian book dealers.

“This evening ceremony is a showcase of the ties that bind the United States and Spain together,” said Ambassador of Spain to the United States Pedro Morenés. “The cooperation between Homeland Security Investigations and special units of the Guardia Civil has born great fruit in ensuring the return of stolen cultural property to Spain,” Ambassador Morenes added.

Today’s repatriation marks the second return of a Columbus letter by ICE, the most recent until now taking place in May 2016.

ICE has returned over 11,000 artifacts to over 30 countries since 2007, including paintings from France, Germany, Poland and Austria, 15th-18th century manuscripts from Italy and Peru, cultural artifacts from China, Cambodia, and two Baatar dinosaur fossils to Mongolia, ancient artifacts including a mummy’s hand to Egypt, royal seals valued at $1,500,000 to the Republic of Korea, and most recently, thousands of ancient artifacts to Iraq.

The superseding indictment returned yesterday charges an additional wire fraud conspiracy, adds an additional count of money laundering, and contains new allegations regarding the distribution of over 4.2 million medically unnecessary dosage units of controlled substances and the administration of medically unnecessary injections that resulted in patient harm.

“We are facing the deadliest drug crisis in American history,” said Attorney General Sessions. “Sadly, some corporate executives and medical professionals continue to exploit vulnerable patients and the American taxpayer for profit. With one American dying of a drug overdose every nine minutes, this superseding indictment reflects the Department of Justice’s determination to prosecute those who engage in opioid-related fraud. These cases are extremely important. Since 2017, the Department charged more than 150 doctors for opioid-related crimes. Today’s indictment reflects our continued dedication to these important cases.
