A Utah man was found guilty of organizing and directing a nationwide drug trafficking organization that imported opioids from China, then using it to manufacture fake prescription medications sold throughout the US.

Aaron Michael Shamo, 29, of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, was found guilty of orchestrating the import and distribution of fentanyl from China, and now faces a potential mandatory-minimum life sentence for his actions.

 Federal law enforcement agents and prosecutors agree that an undercover purchase of 100 oxycodone pills is a substantial step in an investigation; Shamo was found guilty of selling half a million pills – or more.

“A major narcotics and money laundering operation was dismantled due to the technological expertise of our agents and law enforcement partners,” said Steven Cagen, special agent in charge of HSI Denver.

Hundreds of people may be trapped on a North Carolina Island amid rising floodwater after Hurricane Dorian made landfall, after  slamming into the Outer Banks with hurricane force winds as far as 45 miles away from the eye, and with tropical storm winds up to 200 miles away.

The storm made landfall at Cape Hatteras at 09:00 local time (13:00 GMT), with winds of 90mph (150 km/h), but by 11:00 local time its eye had moved about 50 miles to the north-east

Officials are sending morticians and 200 body bags to the Abaco Islands, the worst-hit part of the archipelago, amid warning of storm surges on the island of Ocracoke, where 800 people were said to have stayed behind.

Hurricane Dorian continues to batter the Bahamas, killing at least five people and inundating homes with floodwater ahead of its expected advance on the United States coast, where more than a million people have been ordered to evacuate.

“The hurricane, one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes on record, had been hovering over Grand Bahama Island for 36 hours by early Monday evening (local time) and was expected to stay put until Tuesday morning.”

The storm is packing maximum sustained winds of 160 mph,  and moving at about a mile per hour, with as many as 13,000 homes in the Bahamas may have been destroyed or severely damaged, and at least five people were killed in the Abaco Islands, in the northern Bahamas.
