President Joe Biden has released his first annual budget – a $6tn (£4.2tn) spending plan that includes steep tax increases for wealthier Americans, a measure that would include huge new social programs and investment in the fight against climate change, yet needs approval from Congress, where Republican Senator Lindsey Graham condemned it as “insanely expensive”.
Under the plan, debt would reach 117% of GDP by 2031, surpassing levels during World War Two, in spite of at least $3tn in proposed tax increases on corporations, capital gains and the top income tax bracket.
Former President Donald Trump, a Republican, also ran up the deficit each year he was in office, and his final annual spending proposal had a price tag of $4.8tn.

An asteroid bigger than the Eiffel tower will fly close to Earth next week, with researchers estimate 2021 KT1 to be between 492 and 1,082 feet, and travelling at an extreme speed of 40,000 miles per hour. NASA says the celestial body will whizz past our planet at a distance of 4.5 million miles, which is nearly 19 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon.
The space agency has categorized 2021 KT1 as a potentially hazardous asteroid, as it monitors around 26,000 near-Earth objects, whose orbits bring them into close proximity with our planet. Every 10,000 years an asteroid larger than 100 metres is expected to reach the Earth’s surface and cause major destruction or produce tidal waves that can inundate low lying coastal areas.
Despite the gloomy forecast, NASA says the threat to any person from an asteroid is much smaller than “from auto accidents, disease, other natural disasters, and a variety of other problems”. NASA is currently working on a project called DART that will help it deflect potentially dangerous asteroids. During the space mission, scheduled to take place in 2022, the space agency will crash a probe into a double asteroid, Didymos.

Named after the founder of North Korea, it is the most important institution for training cadres in the isolated, communist country. Generally, North Koreans’ contacts with the rest of the world are kept to a minimum, including in higher education establishments. So it is all the more surprising that on the English version of its website, Kim Il Sung University boasts of being associated with dozens of partner schools around the world, including two in Germany. Apparently, the university has cleverly compiled an imposing list of past, current and alleged partnerships with “sister universities” and claims that “international academic exchanges are in full swing.”
