Nearly 40,000 residents were without power, as an ice storm in Texas caused by a polar vortex cycling southward from Canada, swept across the region, a nasty winter storm dropping freezing rain and snow to a wide part of the US, all the way to the mid-Atlantic, resulting in hazardous travel conditions, fatal car accidents, extensive tree damage and widespread power outages, with bad weather conditions expected to continue through next week, as tens of thousands in Kentucky and West Virginia have lost power as well. The storm, kindly named “Shirley” by The Weather Channel, led to several fatal multi-car pileups in Ft. Worth and Austin, Texas, Thursday morning, weather.com reported, killing at least six people in car accidents.

“The scene we saw today is really one unlike probably any of us have ever seen and we pray to god we never see again,” Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes said in a press conference late Thursday afternoon, weather.com reported.

Lawyers defending former president Donald Trump accused Democrats of “rank hypocrisy” and hatred of the former president during his impeachment trial in the Senate, as defense team took the floor for the next phase of the impeachment trial, his lawyers seeking to turn the tables on the US Democrats, and accuse them of pursuing a vendetta (which they have  illegally sought) against the Republican politician.

Defense attorneys, used some of the same tactics used by Trump’s opponents earlier this week,  releasing dozens of video clips where prominent Democrats could be seen using incendiary rhetoric similar to Trump’s own, arguing that the former president’s words were protected speech.

Hospitality, car sales and hairdressers recovered some lost ground, the ONS said, with the GDP drop is “comparable to other countries.”

“An increase in Covid-19 testing and tracing also boosted output. The economy continued to grow in the fourth quarter as a whole, despite the additional [lockdown] restrictions in November.”
