George Sorbane Quotes:

1. “So Alex was counting the days until he would step on the holy soil of Boston, ready to breathe the cold Atlantic air and sense the spirits of those remarkable people about whom he had read so much with nearly religious admiration, walk the streets in their footsteps, and pray in the churches where they had found peace and solace in times of fateful junction.”― “The Endless Beginning”

2…………> US On Dangerous Path: President Trump

President Trump’s legal team issued a  furious response ahead of opening arguments in his impeachment trial, rejecting of the impeachment charges, and encouraged the Senate to reject “poisonous partisanship”, while House Democrats led by Nancy, “Anyone caught urinating in front of my mansion will be deported to Arizona” Pelosi  presented their case in forceful fashion, saying the President betrayed public trust with behavior that was the “worst nightmare” of the founding fathers, and released a document supporting their charges.

“President Donald J. Trump used his official powers to pressure a foreign government to interfere in a United States election for his personal political gain. [He] then attempted to cover up his scheme by obstructing Congress’s investigation into his misconduct,” House impeachment managers wrote.

“The Senate should convict and remove President Trump to avoid serious and long-term damage to our democratic values and the nation’s security,” the document said, for the first time formally calling for the Senate to convict the President and remove him from office.

Mr. Trump’s legal team issued a resounding rejection of the impeachment charges, which were read out in the Senate earlier in the week during formalities setting the stage for the trial.

“President Trump categorically and unequivocally denies each and every allegation in both articles of impeachment,” the Trump lawyers’ document said.

“This is a brazen and unlawful attempt to overturn the results of the 2016 election and interfere with the 2020 election — now just months away,” they argued in a six-page document released on Saturday.

3……………> China’s Forgotten Children: In The Millions

Nearly 7 million children are “left behind” in rural areas while both parents worked in big cities to support the family, with the wealth divide and the strict household registration policy that limits the free migration of the population in China to blame for the social phenomenon.

“We haven’t spoken much for many years. We started to quarrel whenever we tried to talk to each other, so we just gave up on talking if [there was] nothing important,” a forgotten child told abc.net.au reporter.

“I know many people are in a similar position with me, with parents working away and being brought up by grandparents.

“But what I can’t let go of is parents of others at least come back home every Spring Festival. My parents haven’t come back for 10 years. They care too much about money.”

4……………> A Mayhem In Beirut: Arrests & Injuries

More than 370 people have been injured during several hours of clashes between Lebanese security forces and protesters that rocked central Beirut on Saturday, as police fired tear gas and unleashed water cannon on the crowds, and protests erupted following the government imposition of the “Whatsapp tax.”
People struggle to withdraw more than a few hundred dollars from banks each week, with the country sinking deeper into an economic crisis, and anger has boiling over at a ruling elite who have dominated power since the 1975-1990 civil war.

The Lebanese Red Cross said it had treated 220 people who were wounded on both sides on Saturday, taking 80 of them to hospital. The Civil Defense said it had given first aid to 114 others and taken 43 people to hospital, and The Internal Security Forces said 142 police were injured.

5…………> Orthodox Christians Take Epiphany Ice Baths

Millions of Orthodox Christians have taken their annual plunge into freezing waters to mark Epiphany. The ritual, to mark the baptism of Jesus, involves submerging yourself three times to “wash away your sins.”

2…………..> Trump’s China Deal: Improve Market Stability, Or A Prelude To Crash?

According to International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Dr. Kristalina Georgieva,  the newly signed China-U.S. phase-one trade deal will reduce the uncertainty that has impeded global economic growth, but the cumulative effect of the U.S.-China trade conflict, provided no actions taken, could mean a loss of 0.8 percent of global GDP, or around 700 billion U.S. dollars by 2020.

“It is a welcoming sign that we now have the phase-one deal, sign in terms of reducing some of the uncertainty,” she said at an event hosted by Peterson Institute for International Economics, a think-tank based in Washington D.C.

Dr. Georgieva warned that trade tensions were “taking a toll” on global growth, at a time when the global economy was going through a “synchronized slowdown.”

“What we are seeing now is that we’ve some reduction of this uncertainty, but it’s not eliminated,” Georgieva said.

“We would see shrinkage of this negative impact, but not the eradication of this impact.”

3……………> Relentless Misery Down Under: Bush-fires, Floods & More

Vicious storms and torrential rain have wreaked havoc in the fire-devastated states of New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, and despite the wet weather, hundreds of blazes continue to burn and many areas remain dry, as several major highways were cut off, while theme parks closed in southeastern Queensland after some of the heaviest rain in months fell in the state. Local media showed video footage of dozens of vehicles being swept away in flash flooding.

Standing water reached 13 inches in some areas and Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology tweeted that over 100 millimeters of rain was expected to fall across the night and early Saturday morning in many other locations.

The Bureau of Meteorology for Queensland also told drivers to “take care on the roads — if it’s flooded, forget it.”

New South Wales, where 4.9 million hectares have been destroyed by fire, saw power cuts due to the heavy rainfall.

Firefighters in the southeastern state were hopeful the weather change would bring much-needed respite for areas where dozens of bush fires still raged.(abc.net.au)

2…………..> Fishing In Muddy Waters: Mr.Xi Visits Myanmar

As recent reports indicate, China’s economy is sliding into a recession, courtesy of Trump & Co tariffs, and hence is no surprise that the venerable Mr. Xi and Myanmar leaders have inked dozens of deals to speed up infrastructure projects in the South-East Asian nation, as Beijing seeks to cement its hold over a neighbor increasingly isolated by the West.

Myanmar has been very cautious of investments by Beijing, and also being careful ahead of elections later this year, yet seem to follow more and more countries that are choosing to ink agreements with China on its trillion-dollar Belt and Road initiative, agreeing to speed-up the implementation of the China Myanmar Economic Corridor, a giant infrastructure scheme worth billions of dollars, with contracts on railways linking south-western China to the Indian Ocean, a deep sea-port in conflict-riven Rakhine state, a special economic zone on the border, and a new city project in the commercial capital of Yangon.

3……………> Politically Correct Police: Shielded UK’s Asian Gangs

An study by the Independent Office for Police Conduct in the Islamic Sheikdom of UK into child sexual exploitation, and the role of senior officers in handling complaints, has uncovered shocking evidence of gross negligence of law enforcement to protect children from abusers, after a senior Rotherham police officer admitted to turning a blind eye to a number of cases of sexual abuse of children by Pakistani grooming gangs for several decades due to worries that an investigation would increase “racial tensions”.

He said in a conversation with the father of one of the victims that “with it [gang members] being Asians, we can’t afford for this to be coming out as Rotherham would erupt”, also referring to the child abuse in the city by British Pakistani men as “P*** shagging”.

The officer told the girl’s father when the latter came to complain about his daughter being missing for weeks that “it had been going on for 30 years and the police could do nothing because of racial tensions”.

4……………> Good Man Kirby: Return Of Fortune

After Howard Kirby bought a footstool around  Christmas along with other furniture from a fundraiser Habitat for Humanity for just US$70 from a charity shop in Michigan, he felt the cushion “seemed kind of hard”, and when his daughter-in-law unzipped the footstool’s cushion, there was $43,170 stashed inside.

After the shock wore off, Mr. Kirby decided to return the money to the original owners — the family of Kim Fauth-Newberry.

“I do what I can to be as much like Christ as I can, and this is the moral thing to do. This is going to help them. I’m so happy for them,” Mr. Kirby said.

Ms. Fauth-Newberry said the furniture had belonged to her grandfather, Phillip Fauth, who died in July.

She said Mr. Fauth was a frugal man who always paid for things in cash, even US$9,000 for a new roof.
