Climate activists across France staged Black Friday protests against Amazon, assailing consumerism and its impact on the environment, as dozens of protesters gathered outside the company’s French headquarters in Clichy, north of Paris, trying to blockade a shopping centre in Paris and a logistics centre near the eastern city of Lyon, with a video from Lyon riot police dragging activists away.
Some French lawmakers want to ban Black Friday because of its environmental impact, and Environment Minister Elisabeth Borne has warned against the “consumption frenzy” linked to the event, with environmentalists accusing Amazon of accelerating climate change through its rapid delivery services, which they say contribute to greenhouse gases emissions.
In response, Amazon said the right to protest, but disagreed with “the actions of these individuals”, with Amazon boss promises climate-change action, as similar protests erupted in other European countries, including the Islamic Merkeldom of Germany.
A group of workers from six distribution centers staged a walkout over pay and conditions, with the union Verdi, which called the strike, saying its members’ hard work could not be bought for “knock-down prices”, as a trade union protest banner reads, “Together we are strong! We are on strike”, on a fence of the Amazon logistic centre in Werne, Germany, 29 November 2019.
