A  judge found Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiaries helped fuel Oklahoma’s opioid crisis, ordering the consumer products giant to pay $US572 million to clean up the problem.

The Pharmacy giant has a contract with poppy growers in Tasmania who produce a lot of the raw opium used to make company’s drugs, with Cleveland County District Judge Thad Balkman’s ruling followed the first state opioid case to make it to trial and could help shape negotiations over roughly 1,500 similar lawsuits filed by state, local and tribal governments consolidated before a federal US judge in Ohio.

“The opioid crisis has ravaged the state of Oklahoma,” Mr. Balkman said before announcing the verdict

 “It must be abated immediately.“

The companies are expected to appeal against the ruling to the Oklahoma Supreme Court with one of its lawyers, Sabrina Strong, calling the judge’s decision “flawed”.

President Trump is open to meeting Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani under the right circumstances, and the statement comes after Iran’s foreign minister made a brief and unannounced visit to the G7 summit in France on Sunday, despite the relations between the countries deteriorated since Washington withdrew last year from a 2015 deal to limit Iran’s nuclear activities. 

Mr. Trump said he had “good feelings” about the prospect of a new nuclear deal with Iran.

“I really believe that Iran can be a great nation,” he said.

Mr. Rouhani said he was ready to meet anyone if he felt it would benefit Iran:

“If I am sure that attending a session, or having a meeting with someone will help develop my country, and resolve the people’s problems, I will not hesitate to do so,” he said.

According to reports, a Hong Kong police officer fired a gunshot during protests on Sunday, the first time a live round has been used since demonstrations broke out in June, with images show several other officers also pointed guns at protesters, who were chasing them with sticks and poles, and in another first, police deployed water cannon against protesters earlier in the day.

Police told local media that the gunshot was fired as a warning to protesters, and that several officers had been taken to hospital as a result of the clashes.

The protests began in the city’s Tsuen Wan district and have since spread to the district of Tsim Sha Tsui.

During the melee, one older man was seen on his knees pleading with police not to shoot.

Police also fired rubber bullets and tear gas, and used two water cannon vehicles to clear barricades and disperse crowds, vehicles being driven through the streets of Tsuen Wan, where a group of demonstrators had set up roadblocks and dug up bricks from the pavement.

President Trump may order US companies to leave China if a national emergency is declared, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said.
