1…………> Another MS 13 Cell Busted: Maryland

A federal grand jury has indicted today six MS-13 members, five of whom were unlawfully in the United States, on charges in connection with their MS-13 gang activities, including racketeering conspiracy; murder in aid of racketeering; violent crimes in aid of racketeering; use, carry and possession of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence; and conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering.

Charged in the nine-count indictment are alleged MS-13 members and associates Moises Alexis Reyes-Canales aka Sicopata, 19; Marlon Cruz-Flores, aka Little S, 22; Fermin Gomez-Jimenez, 20; Manuel Martinez-Aguilar, aka El Lunatic and Zomb, 19; Juan Carlos Sandoval-Rodriguez, aka Picaro, El Pastor, and Gasper, 20; and David Diaz-Alvarado, 20. All the defendants except Cruz Flores, of Annapolis, Maryland, were illegally residing in Annapolis.

According to the indictment, MS-13 members and associates conspired to murder a rival gang member.  On or about March 11, 2016, Sandoval-Rodriguez lured the victim to a park in Annapolis, Maryland with the intent to murder the victim.  On or about that same date, Cruz-Flores, Gomez-Jimenez, Sandoval-Rodriguez, and Diaz-Alvarado, and other members and associates of MS-13 murdered the victim in Annapolis, for the purpose of gaining entrance to, maintaining, and increasing position in MS-13.

2…………> Pill Mill: Houston

A federal jury found a Houston physician and the owner of a pain management clinic guilty today for their roles in running a “pill mill” that provided tens of thousands of unlawful prescriptions for millions of doses of opioids and other controlled substances.

 After a  nine-day trial, Gazelle Craig, D.O., 41, and Shane Faithful, 48, both of Houston, Texas, were convicted of one count of conspiracy to unlawfully distribute controlled substances and three counts of unlawfully distributing and dispensing controlled substances. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled before U.S. District Judge David Hittner of the Southern District of Texas, who presided over the trial.  Both defendants were remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshal’s Service.

According to evidence presented at trial, from March 2015 through July 2017, Craig, a licensed doctor, and Faithful, the clinic owner, ran Gulfton Community Health Center (Gulfton), which operated as an illegal pill mill.  The evidence showed that Craig unlawfully wrote approximately 18,252 prescriptions for over 2.1 million dosage units of hydrocodone, a Schedule II controlled substance, and approximately 15,649 prescriptions for over 1.3 million dosage units of carisoprodol, a Schedule IV controlled substance.  The combination of hydrocodone and carisoprodol is a dangerous drug cocktail with no known medical benefit, the evidence showed.

3…………> Dog Fighting Ring: Busted

On March 23, 2018, the United States filed a civil forfeiture complaint seeking the possession of 63 pit bull-type dogs that were allegedly involved in a dogfighting venture in violation of the federal Animal Welfare Act. 

According to the complaint filed last week in federal court, the animals were seized after GSP troopers conducted a traffic stop involving a vehicle inside of which an injured dog was found. The operator of the vehicle admitted to having been present at a dogfight in Eastman, Georgia, and provided law enforcement with the location of the fight. At the reported location, agents discovered a disassembled dog fighting “pit” and more than 60 pit bull-type dogs staked to the ground by heavy chains. The condition of a majority of the dogs, including scarring and aggression towards other dogs, was consistent with dog fighting and related training.

Mohamed Elshinawy, 32, of Edgewood, Maryland, was sentenced today to 20 years in prison, to be followed by 15 years of supervised release, for conspiracy to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization; providing and attempting to provide material support to ISIS; terrorism financing; and making false statements in connection with a terrorism matter.

As a part of the conspiracy, Elshinawy expressed his support for an Islamic caliphate and his belief in the legitimacy of ISIS. In addition, he expressed his hope that ISIS would be victorious and its enemies defeated and discussed his readiness to travel to live in the Islamic State.  In various other conversations, Elshinawy pledged his allegiance to ISIS, described himself as its soldier, committed to making violent jihad, and asked that others convey his message of loyalty to ISIS leadership.

Elshinawy also received payments from a foreign company totaling $8,700 to be used to fund a terrorist attack in the U.S.

5…………> Espionage For ‘Larger Public Good’: FBI Agent

For the second time in less than a year, a former US government employee, this time an FBI agent in Minnesota was arrested for sharing documents that supposedly would help expose “systemic bias” at the FBI, the US government source widely believed to have supplied sensitive information to The Intercept magazine. 

Terry James Albury is likely to plead guilty to two counts filed against him on Thursday by the US Justice Department’s National Security Division, the Star Tribune, a Minneapolis-based newspaper, reports.

“Terry Albury served the US with distinction both here at home and abroad in Iraq,” his attorneys said in a statement.

“He accepts full responsibility for the conduct set forth in the Information. He would like to add that as the only African-American FBI field agent in Minnesota, Mr. Albury’s actions were driven by a conscientious commitment to long-term national security and addressing the well-documented systemic biases within the FBI,” the statement concluded.

The silent Austrian film “The City Without Jews” (Die Stadt Ohne Juden) from the mid-1920s, now fully restored and returned to cinemas, originally found in a Paris flea market in 2015 after being lost for decades, was boldly predicting the rise of Nazism nearly 20 years before the Holocaust, at a time when the Nazi party was banned in Austria, and when Adolf Hitler was in jail in Germany, working on his book Mein Kampf.

 The film tells the story of a city that expels all of its Jews who are made the scapegoats for rising prices and unemployment and was based on a satirical novel by the Austrian Jewish writer and journalist, Hugo Bettauer.

A statement from the London Metropolitan Police said based on a detailed forensic and scientific examination, the “detectives believe the Skripals first came into contact with the nerve agent at their home address. Specialists have identified the highest concentration of the nerve agent, to-date, as being on the front door of the address.”

 
“[The detectives] will continue to focus their inquiries on the home address for the coming weeks, and possibly months as the investigation continues. They will also be “carrying out thorough searches in the areas surrounding this address as part of the ongoing investigation and as a precautionary measure. Traces of the nerve agent have been found at some of the other scenes detectives have been working at over the past few weeks, but at lower concentrations to that found at the home address,” the statement concluded.
 
Skripal, 66, and Yulia, 33, were admitted to a hospital on March 4 after being found unconscious in the southern English city of Salisbury, and the investigators will go through more than 5,000 hours of CCTV footage and examine over 1,350 exhibits to determine the source of the deadly attack.

At least 16 Palestinians were killed and hundreds injured by Israeli security forces confronting one of the largest Palestinian demonstrations along the Israel-Gaza border in recent years, as tens of thousands of Gazans, including families with children, gathered along the border as clashes force the Israeli troops to fire live bullets and tear gas at Palestinians on the other side of the fence.
30,000 protesters demanded that Palestinian refugees be allowed the right of return to towns and villages from which their families fled in 1948.

1…………> Operation “Matador”: ICE


Twenty-four were arrested Thursday under Operation “Matador”, the intelligence-driven, unified effort to combat the proliferation of MS-13 and other transnational criminal gang activity in Long Island, the New York City metropolitan area and Hudson Valley. 

A total of 475 individuals were arrested during this ongoing enforcement effort, most of which were confirmed as gang members and affiliates. The most prominent gangs with arrests during this operation were MS-13 with 274 arrests and the 18th street gang with 15 arrests.  This operation yielded 227 total criminal arrests and 248 administrative arrests.

Of the gang members arrested during this ongoing enforcement action, 80 had additional criminal histories, including prior convictions for assault and weapons charges. 5 are facing serious criminal charges.  Others were taken into custody during the operation included:

The arrestees, 462 male and 13 female, included nationals from 10 countries – El Salvador (199); Honduras (56); Mexico (31); Guatemala (27); Ecuador (05), Dominican Republic (21) and St. Lucia (1).

Operation Matador in New York is conducted under the auspices of the national gang enforcement effort, Operation Community Shield has resulted in nearly 5,000 criminal arrests and more than 3,200 civil immigration arrests of MS-13 leaders, members and associates

A federal jury in the District of New Jersey found the former chief executive officer and the former vice president of a now-bankrupt public air charter operator guilty yesterday for their roles in a scheme to steal millions of dollars in passenger money for future travel from an escrow account.

Judy Tull, 73, and Kay Ellison, 58, both of Edenton, North Carolina, were each convicted of one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud affecting financial institutions and to commit bank fraud, four substantive counts of wire fraud affecting financial institutions and three substantive counts of bank fraud following a seven-day trial.  Tull is the former CEO of Myrtle Beach Direct Air and Tours (Direct Air), which was headquartered in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with operations in Daniels, West Virginia, and Ellison is its former vice president and managing partner.  Sentencing has been scheduled for July 17, 2018, before U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton of the District of New Jersey, who presided over the trial.

It was a powerful image as China’s President, “Uncle” Xi Jinping, walking with the leader of North Korea, “Nephew” Kim Jong-un aka “Comrade Un” in front of goose-stepping military honor guard, a statement of a bond forged in blood, and a “steel hands” relationship between two fanatical Communist countries on the battlefield of the Korean War, when China interceded against the US-led western forces to the tune of nearly 200,000 PLA volunteer deaths and forced the biggest retreat in American military history.

Now nearly 70 years later, China is playing a delicate game, maintaining pressure on Pyongyang but not pushing it into the abyss, backing sanctions but watering down potentially tougher international restrictions.

4…………> Letters From Below: Letters Of Love

In February 1941 SS Gairsoppa, a steam cargo ship travelling from India to Britain was attacked, torpedoed and sunk about 300 miles off the coast of Ireland by German U-boats, falling down almost 13500 feet to its grave to the North Atlantic Ocean dark depths, leaving only three survivors out of 84 crew members. 

They lay there forgotten for 70 years until marine archaeologists discovered the long-lost shipwreck, and it’s cargo of millions of ounces of silver, sent from colonial India to the UK to help fund the war effort. But most importantly, a treasure trove of hundreds of lost letters, including personal messages from soldiers to their loved ones, were recovered from a World War II shipwreck in an almost pristine condition in an airlock onboard the SS Gairsoppa as it sank to the bottom of the Atlantic in 1941.


Signed, sealed, but never delivered for 77 years the letters shined a light on correspondence during the war, especially one letter, written on December 1, 1940, by Private Pete Walker was to his “most precious sweetheart”, Phyll.

5………> Where’s The Black Hole: Cosmic Mystery

“Finding a galaxy without dark matter is unexpected because this invisible, mysterious substance is the most dominant aspect of [known] galaxies. The idea is that dark matter is not just an object inside a galaxy but it helps form the galaxy,”  lead author Pieter van Dokkum of Yale University University tried to explain why a galaxy, called NGC 1052-DF2, contains virtually no dark matter, contradicting the current assumption that clusters of that mysterious form of energy in the early universe attracted hydrogen gas, which solidified to form the first stars and galaxies shortly after the big bang.

Galactic cluster NGC 1052-DF2 is 65 million light-years away in the constellation of “Cetus the Whale”, and its unusually high ratio of luminous star clusters to dark matter was studied with the “Dragonfly” telescope, facing the researchers with another contradictory enigma of early cosmos formation.
