2…………>President Trump: Florida State of Emergency
President Donald J. Trump declared a state of emergency in Florida yesterday as the country prepares for Hurricane Michael to make landfall in the coming hours.
“The emergency declaration, which is retroactive to Sunday, will provide additional federal assistance and resources to Florida in its preparation and recovery efforts. The measure also includes additional debris removal and emergency protective assistance to several counties that are expected to be hardest hit by the storm, including Gulf, Hamilton, Jackson, Jefferson, Madison, and Suwannee,” The Hill reported.
3…………> Back To Work: Justice Kavanaugh
Last night, Brett M. Kavanaugh became the 114th Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy administered the oath—the first time that a Justice has sworn in a former clerk to take his seat. With his left hand on the Bible and right hand raised in the air, Justice Kavanaugh swore to be a real, impartial arbiter of the law.
“On the Supreme Court, I will seek to be a force for stability and unity,” he said during yesterday’s ceremony at the White House.
“My goal is to be a great Justice for all Americans and all of America.”
The work begins immediately. Justice Kavanaugh took his seat this morning, hearing oral arguments for the first of several significant cases this week. During last night’s ceremonial swearing-in, the American people saw a glimpse of how our nation’s newest Justice will approach these responsibilities.
“The Supreme Court is an institution of law. It is not a partisan or political institution,” he said.
“The Justices do not sit on opposite sides of an aisle. We do not caucus in separate rooms. The Supreme Court is a team of nine, and I will always be a team player on the team of nine.”
4…………> Hurricane Michael: “Too Late To Leave”?
The storm Michael has sustained winds of 145mph (230km/h) and is due to make landfall at about midday (16:00 GMT), forcing more than 370,000 people in Florida to evacuate and move to higher ground, but officials estimate that far fewer have left.
“Do not leave your house,” Florida Governor Rick Scott said on Wednesday.
“The worst thing you can do now is left,” he said, adding that those who do “put yourself and your family in danger.
” Those people “who stick around and experience storm surge, unfortunately, don’t usually live to tell about it,” he said, adding that they put first responders at risk as well. Florida has declared a state of emergency, as have Alabama and Georgia In an 11:00 (15:00 GMT) bulletin, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Michael was about 40 miles (65km) from Panama City, Florida. The NHC warns that some regions of Florida may experience storm surges of up to 14ft (4m).

5…………> Trump’s ICE Broom: MA Drug Ring Busted
An ICE operation which led to 40 arrests and resulted in the seizure of 10 kilograms of deadly fentanyl, was the culmination of a multi-agency federal investigation which targeted significant fentanyl traffickers, opioids and other drugs.
Also, the operation netted a large number of repeat felony offenders, many of whom were also illegally present in the U.S.; eight aliens had already previously been deported at least once before and are facing prosecution for criminal re-entry.
All of those arrested have prior convictions for acts of violence, firearm offenses, and drug trafficking; and many were determined to be illegally present in the United States. The operation involved over 200 federal law enforcement agents from all over New England, including the DEA, ERO, HSI, FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service; and the ATF.
“HSI special agents stand firm against transnational criminal organizations who exploit America’s legitimate trade, travel, and financial systems,” said Peter C. Fitzhugh, special agent in charge HSI Boston. “As demonstrated in this operation, we stand ready to aggressively investigate members of violent gangs, fentanyl and opioid drug trafficking organizations and those who commit fraud at the expense of taxpayers and our government, domestic and abroad.”
