Antoine Dominique Domino Jr. was born on February 26, 1928 in New Orleans, Louisiana. After teaching himself to play the piano as a child and taking lessons from his uncle, young Domino performed in local nightclubs before Imperial Records signed him in 1949.
His first big hit came in 1955 with “Ain’t That a Shame,” which had originally been titled “Ain’t It a Shame.” In the early 1960s, he rose to stardom with super hits like “Be My Guest,” “I’m Ready” and “I’m Walkin’.”
The rock ‘n’ roll pioneer’s died Tuesday of natural causes near his hometown of New Orleans.
