The Justice Department’s Office of Violence Against Women (OVW) will direct more than $18 million in grant funding to Texas to support efforts to curb domestic violence throughout the state, as the state fights with the COVID-19 pandemic, reports indicate that many cities – including Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston, and San Antonio – may be experiencing surges in domestic violence, and because of the virus, many domestic violence victims feel they’re safest inside their homes, but that may or may not be the case.
Research shows that intimate partner homicides are troublingly common, with CDC statistics indicating that roughly 1 in 6 homicide victims are killed by an intimate partner, and tragically, Texas accounts for 10 percent of the nation’s domestic violence homicides, hence in June 2019, Attorney General William P. SAN ANTONIO — Special agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigation (HSI) filed a criminal complaint charging an Austin man with transporting undocumented immigrants resulting in death, as on March 17, Sebastian Tovar, 24, from Austin, appeared in federal court and was charged for his role in a conspiracy to transport undocumented immigrants resulting in death.
According to court documents, Tovar was traveling in a maroon pickup truck on FM 2523 near Del Rio when a DPS trooper attempted to stop him for speeding. Tovar failed to stop, and a pursuit ensued. Tovar led the trooper on a chase for approximately 50 miles, at times reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour. Traveling north into the southbound lane on Highway 277, Tovar collided with another vehicle head-on, resulting in the death of eight undocumented immigrants that had been in Tovar’s pickup truck.

President Biden has responded to his Russian counterpart’s invitation to a livestreamed conversation, saying he expects to speak him at some unspecified future date:
“I’m sure we’ll talk at some point,” Biden said, and when asked about whether he would impose more sanctions against Russia, he clarified “that will come in time”, refusing to give a timeframe for any possible discussion with Putin, but the Russian president said he would be ready to speak to his US counterpart as early as Friday or on Monday.
Putin invited Biden for the livestream talks a day after the US president agreed with ABC News correspondent and former Clinton aide George Stephanopoulos’s characterization of the Russian leader as a “killer.” Biden went on to promise that Putin would “pay a price” over Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2020 presidential election.
Putin brushed off the “killer” epithet, wishing the US leader “good health” and suggesting that Biden may have projected US guilt for things like slavery and the mistreatment of Native Americans onto Russia. The Kremlin, however, suggested that the remarks signaled that Washington has no desire to improve relations.

Germany may not be able to relax lockdown measures in the run-up to Easter, as the country’s health minister Jens Spahn made his comments at Germany’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases, warning that case numbers were rising at a “very clearly exponential rate”:
“The rising case numbers may mean that we are unable to take any further steps towards opening up in the weeks to come. On the contrary, we may even have to take steps backwards,” Spahn said.
Health authorities say highly contagious variants have driven up case numbers in the EU’s biggest country, which is entering a third wave of the disease.
“There are not yet enough vaccine doses in Europe to stop the third wave by vaccination alone,” says Spahn.
“Even if the deliveries from EU orders come reliably, it will still take a few weeks until the risk groups are fully vaccinated.”
He said he would be in favor of signing a national supply deal with Russia for its Sputnik V vaccine for COVID-19:
“I can also well imagine that we conclude contracts — and conclude them quickly,” he told a weekly news conference.
“I am actually very much in favor of us doing it nationally if the European Union does not do something.”
