In 2018, the US Navy said it may end its operations in Haifa Port this year due to a Chinese company becoming involved in the port’s development and expansion after a contract included handing a Chinese firm control over the project.
Israeli authorities have rejected a US proposal to oversee a sweeping security inspection at Haifa Port, over concerns in Washington that Chinese companies are contributing to its expansion.
According to Israeli newspaper ‘Haaretz’ on Monday, the US requested the inspection last year amid a critical atmosphere in Pentagon against Israel due to China’s participation in the development of Israel’s largest port. Washington reportedly warned Israel against its persistent cooperation with China and threatened to halt American vessels from docking in the port of Haifa if it continued.
Relations between intelligence services in the US and Israel remain strained due to the differences between the two countries over the matter. Officials in Washington have repeatedly expressed their uneasiness with the “the expansion of Chinese influence in Israel,” and warned that it is considered a threat to US strategic interests in the Middle East, Hareetz reports.
Citing a report issued by the American Jewish Institute for National Security (JINSA), the Israeli paper wrote that “the United States needs the help of its allies, as it seeks to reduce its presence in the Middle East and reduce its economic dependence on China.
“China is investing in Israeli companies and acquiring Israeli technology in order to raise its military and industrial status and increase its influence,” the report claimed.

The state well known for its sparling deserts and vicious heath waves is seeing some of its coldest temperatures in more than 30 years, with some areas breaking records that are more than a century old, with parts of Texas hit 0F (-18C), and weather warnings are going to stay in place through the week that it may be blanketed by sheet of ice.
So why is this normally boiling state suddenly freezing over?
According to the US National Weather Service (NWS), this is down to an “Arctic outbreak” that originated just above the US-Canada border.
Cold air outbreaks such as these are normally kept in the Arctic by a series of low-pressure systems, the NWS said. However this one moved through Canada and spilled out into the US last week.
The weather has already proven deadly. On Thursday, icy roads led to a massive crash involving more than 100 vehicles in Fort Worth, Texas, killing six people and leaving dozens more needing hospital treatment.
“The expansive dome of subfreezing temperatures across the northern tier of the country has laid the foundation for winter storms to wreak havoc from coast-to-coast, not only going into this weekend, but also into next week,” the NWS said in a statement released on Friday.
Weather warnings for severe winter conditions are going to remain in place until at least Tuesday, when the weather system will begin to move north.
Marc Chenard, a forecaster from the service’s Weather Prediction Centre, told Reuters that Amarillo in Texas will only see a high temperature of 2F (-17C), breaking the city’s previous record of 12F (-11C) that was set in 1895.

Scientists have discovered a number of new coronavirus lineages that seem to be subject to a similar mutation in the United States, according to a study published on Sunday.
The research team has indicated seven lineages that all gained a mutation in the same spot in their genes, sparking concerns as to whether the mutation can affect the level of contagiousness of the coronavirus.
“Independent genomic surveillance programs based in New Mexico and Louisiana contemporaneously detected the rapid rise of numerous clade 20G (lineage B.1.2) infections carrying a Q677P substitution in S [spike protein]”, the study abstract said.
There is no clear evidence that the mutation may affect the way COVID-19 is spread among people, but Jeremy Kamil, a virologist at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and a co-author of the new study, suggests, cited by The New York Times, that “there’s clearly something going on with this mutation.”
“I think there’s a clear signature of an evolutionary benefit,” Dr. Kamil said.
Suggestions were also voiced that the mutation could affect the way the virus enters human cells, although researchers have outlined that additional experimental data is needed.
