When someone had posted a meme — illegal under German law for its Nazi content— along with some other racist remarks, on a school’s digital bulletin board, it brought vivid memories of another well known racist, aka Adolf Hitler whose influence on teens has been disturbing on many citizens, as memes are just one social media tool in the toolbox media-savvy extremist groups use, extending their digital reach from the dark corners of the web to popular channels like YouTube, Instagram and gaming platforms.

It doesn’t necessarily spell radicalization, but point to a disturbing trend among the underage population: They’re now more likely to share extremist content, in many cases unknowingly.

Social media users have mourned the anniversary of the death of the Chinese doctor who first made the coronavirus public, a great humanitarian named Li Wenliang who died after catching COVID-19 from a patient, and whose case triggered popular anger towards the Chinese government, with thousands of Chinese mourners took to social media to pay tribute to him, the doctor who first broke the news of a new mysterious virus in Wuhan, one year after he died from COVID-19.

Chinese authorities subsequently removed critical online comments and launched a campaign to show that they acted efficiently and managed to keep infection rates low.

The new ruling military junta in Myanmar responded to ongoing protests against the recent coup by imposing a nationwide internet blackout, but despite the blackout, demonstrations in the Southeast Asian country continued to grow with Saturday seeing the largest anti-coup protests yet as around 3,000 protesters marched near Yangon University, and the UN called for internet services to be restored and for the military regime to hand power back to the civilian government, as in Yangon, members of the crowd shouted “Military dictatorship should fall” and “Down with dictatorship”:

“They don’t respect our people’s votes and I think they are betraying the country,” one protester told AFP.

“Our revolution starts today.”

President Biden is pushing ahead with plans to ram through a $1.9tn relief bill without Republican support after disappointing jobs data, and despite warnings the stimulus package may be too big, he vowed to “act fast”, as his fellow Democrats run Congress, and planning to pass the final bill using a budget maneuver, a stark change in a shift of tone after he entered office pledging bipartisanship, following a meeting with 10 Republican senators at the White House in the hope of a breakthrough, but brushing off their counter-proposal for a slimmed-down $618bn coronavirus relief bill.

Speaking at the White House on Friday after meeting congressional Democratic leaders, he said:

“A lot of folks are losing hope. I believe the American people are looking right now to their government for help, to do our job, to not let them down.

“So I’m going to act. I’m going to act fast. I’d like to be doing it with the support of Republicans. They’re just not willing to go as far as I think we have to go.”
