In the last month the UK has seen a record number of COVID-19 cases for a fifth day in succession, as hospitals in Lebanon are being overwhelmed as infection rates soar.

The United Kingdom has recorded more new coronavirus infections in a single day than ever before for a fifth consecutive day, registering more than 57,700 cases within 24 hours.

Many of those cases are attributed to a variant of the virus that appears to be more contagious and is particularly rampant in London.

On 24 December, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that London and Brussels had completed “the biggest trade deal yet”, following months of talks which were stalled over a spate of sensitive issues, including those related to fisheries, hence a flotilla of UK Royal Navy gunships has been deployed to the English Channel in an apparent show of force to protect the country’s fishing area in the wake of the post-Brexit deal.

The UK Defense Ministry said the convoy of warships had left Portsmouth “to carry out routine activity as part of pre-planned deployments”, and Admiral Lord Alan West, the former head of the Royal Navy, for his part called the flotilla’s deployment “an act of deterrence”:

“We are not trying to have a punch-up with foreign vessels. We are signaling that these are our waters and we are responsible for looking after them”, he pointed out.
