The City of Portland was rocked by protests throughout much of last year amid the Black Lives Matter movement and election uncertainty; 2021 did not start much differently.
A riot was declared in Portland, Oregon just an hour before the clock struck 12:00 on New Year’s Eve.
Police announced on Twitter that demonstrators “have thrown multiple firebombs at officers” and even “launched commercial grade fireworks at the Federal Courthouse and Justice Center”, prompting the authorities to respond.
“The violence from the crowd has prompted a declaration of a riot. All persons in the area of Southwest 3rd Avenue around Southwest Main Street are ordered to leave to the south and west immediately,” Portland Police announced on Twitter late on Thursday night.

“If you do not leave you are subject to arrest, citation, and/or the use of force, including but not limited to impact weapons and tear gas,” they warned.

Missouri’s Josh Hawley had expressed election integrity concerns, despite a lack of evidence for widespread fraud, and he will be the first senator to object when Congress certifies US President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory next week, as a group of Republicans in the lower chamber of Congress, the House of Representatives, is also planning to contest the election results.
The US Electoral College – which confirms November’s presidential election result by awarding points for each state won by the two White House rivals – earlier this month cemented Mr. Biden’s victory over Donald Trump by 306-232.
Mr. Hawley said he could not vote to certify the electoral results “without raising the fact that some states, particularly Pennsylvania, failed to follow their own state election laws”.
“At the very least, Congress should investigate allegations of voter fraud and adopt measures to secure the integrity of our elections. But Congress has so far failed to act.”

ICE arrested 18 foreign nationals sought for their roles in known or suspected human rights violations or human smuggling and trafficking during a nationwide operation which concluded on Dec. 17, in coordination with the ICE Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Center, and the ICE Office of the Principal Legal Advisor, worked with ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Newark, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Seattle, San Francisco and Salt Lake City field offices to arrest these fugitives.
Since 2014, ICE successfully effectuated five “No Safe Haven” operations targeting known and suspected human rights violators. This year’s Operation No Safe Haven Plus lent support to additionally advance the agency’s ongoing commitment to locate fugitives both affiliated with human smuggling or trafficking and subject to final orders of removal.
