The death toll from the corona-virus outbreak in Italy jumped by 133 to 366, by far the largest daily rise in fatalities there since the outbreak came to light last month, with most of the deaths and cases have occurred in the northern region of Lombardy, forcing the government to enforce a quarantine of some 16 million Italians who are now in lock-down.
The country has more corona-virus cases than South Korea, with the total number of cases leaping from 5,883 to 7,375, the highest number of recorded corona-virus cases outside China that has more than 80,000 cases.
Angelo Borrelli, the head of the nation’s Civil Protection Agency, said of those originally infected, 622 had fully recovered, compared to 589 the day before.
Most of Italy’s deaths and infections have occurred in Lombardy, a populous northern region which the Government has placed under lock-down until April 3.
About 16 million Italians are now in lock-down across 15 northern provinces, with schools, gyms, museums, nightclubs and other public spaces closed.
The Italian stock exchange, based in Milan, will open as usual on Monday (local time), but traders are expecting a wild start to the week.

Asian stock markets Monday trading was hit by a major crash in oil prices, starting in Japan, where the benchmark Nikkei 225 index crashed 6.1% while in Australia, the ASX 200 dropped about 6% in early trading.
Markets have been shook-up by the threat of a price war between oil exporting group OPEC, and its main ally Russia, as Asian investors also reacted to a slump in Chinese export figures released at the weekend.
Global markets are seeing heightened volatility(VIX index) over fears of a major economic hit from the corona-virus, and after oil prices crashed more than 20% on Monday, energy firms have seen some of the biggest share price falls.

“The establishment put a great deal of pressure on Pete Buttigieg, on Amy Klobuchar, who ran really aggressive campaigns. Well, I know both of them. They work really, really hard. But suddenly, right before Super Tuesday, they announced their withdrawal,” Sanders said during an interview on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’.
“If they had not withdrawn from the race before Super Tuesday, which is kind of a surprise to a lot of people, I suspect we would have won in Minnesota, we would have won in Maine, we would have won in Massachusetts. The turnout may have been a little bit different”, he added.
Following fellow progressive Senator Elizabeth Warren declining to make an endorsement following her own withdrawal, he said he would welcome her support but that the campaign will be victorious based on its working class appeal.
